Sight Seeing
Over 150 years ago, Darjeeling was established as "Health station," after it was gifted to the British by the Sikkim ruler. It grew into one of the most famous hill stations in India, regularly drawing people for its cool climate, the fantastic backdrop of some the highest snow –clad peaks of the Himalayas, and a very gracious life –style. Not only did the people flock to Darjeeling to escape the heat of the plains during the summer month, but also to celebrate the winter. Darjeeling has a great deal to offer round the year for people with special interest including Nature, photography, trekking, tea, botany, ornithology and the arts.

THE TOY TRAIN
By the late 1800s, Darjeeling has gained in importance as a hill station but the only means of transportation of goods to and from the town was by bullock carts using the Hill Cart road from Siliguri. An agent of the East Bengal Railway, Franklyn Prestage, came up with the plan for a narrow guage rail link between Siliguri and Darjeeling. Construction started in 1879 and the first train pulled by the very gusty steam engine comprising three coaches puffed into Darjeeling on July 4th,1881. The trains nicknamed ‘Toy Train" of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) have making daily journeys for over a century. Not quite the fastest means of reaching Darjeeling from the plains - the journey takes around 8 hours- the trip is more of an experience. During the season, there are short-trip on offer from Darjeeling to Ghoom. The Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train is second Railway in the world to be honoured with the UNESCO World Heritage status.

Huge forest area were cleared and tea planted. Chinese experts were called into teach the art of tea making and thousands of Nepalese were hired to work in the tea gardens. Darjeeling Tea had such a premium value in the Western markets that it was soon considered to be one of the finest tea in the world when it came to aroma and delicacy of taste. Soon named the "Champagne of the East" not only has the tea formed the backbone of the economy of the region, but "Darjeeling and "excellent tea" have become synonymous.
